Adding to the Food Supply

With the Mormon food pantry somewhat bare, we're left to our own devices to bolster our emergency food supplies. I got some oxygen absorbers from the food pantry and some re-useable gallon containers at Wal-Mart, and filled some of them with potato flakes and some with flour. Wal-Mart is also selling 25-pound bags of red wheat, so we bought some of that, and a 25-pound bag of rice. We'll need more oxygen absorbers and more air-tight containers, but we're slowly increasing our food supplies. We've got about a four month supply so far.

Hi DJ what are oxygen absorbers? How does one use them? We don't have much room for food storage at our place, but we'll have a little extra room at our storage unit...

An oxygen absorber is a little packet that you place inside the air-tight food container. It removes the existing oxygen, as well as any new oxygen that may leak in over the years. (See Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxygen_absorber and this link: http://www.survival-center.com/foodfaq/ff17-oxy.htm#Oxygen). So far, we've gotten our oxygen absorbers freom the local LDS cannery, but since we need more, we're going to try the sources listed on the second link.
