The Cupboard Was Bare

The
ripple effect of worldwide food supply shortages continues.  (My wife insists it's not a shortage— it's just demand exceeding supply.  To me, that's what a shortage is.)

Last night I went
canning with the Mormons— dry canning at the food pantry.  When you go in to help can, you get to place an order for up to 36 cans.  There's just one problem: they were out of wheat, flour, rice, oats, and white beans.  They ran out of spaghetti, pinto beans, and refried beans filling the night's orders.

I came home with 25 pounds of potato flakes and a can of dried apples.  It's hard to be prepared when some of the basic staples aren't available!

Wal-Mart is also selling 25-pound bags of red wheat, so we bought some of that, and a 25-pound bag of rice. We'll need more oxygen absorbers and more air-tight containers, but we're slowly increasing our food supplies. We've got about a four month supply so far. ...
