Religious Advice: Be Prepared

We had dinner last night with some friends, a couple who returned to the LDS Church of their youth after a long period of absence.  Our friends told us that the Church Elders are giving the following advice for these economic times: pay off your debts and build up your food storage.

The Mormons are
big on preparedness.  They're also well acquainted with adversity, and when disaster happens, they're often the first ones to fill a 747 with supplies and go there.  So it's no real surprise that they're counseling their members to be prepared for economic adversity.  Still, in these troubled times, their advice is sound.  Paying off debt reduces the monthly budget, and food in the basement is better then money in the bank— especially if, as some now predict, banks start failing.

While my wife and I are not Mormons, we've come to respect the Church and its role in the community.  I'm not without my criticisms of the LDS Church (like most other churches I'm familiar with).  But if thinking people like our friends are comfortable in there, clearly there's more to it than most press reports (and rumors) reveal.
