High MPG Used Cars
Looking for a cheap used car with high gas mileage? Consumer Reports (April 2008 p. 83) gives the following top three picks under $10,000:
- 2000 Honda Insight (51 mpg)
- 2001-2002 Toyota Prius (41 mpg)
- 2000-2005 Toyota Echo (38 mpg)
The latter two also appear on CR's "Best of the Best" list for reliability.
In the $10,000 to $20,000 range CR recommends these for mileage:
- 2004-2006 Toyota Prius (44)
- 2003 Toyota Prius (41)
- 2003-2005 Honda Civic Hybrid (37)
All three made the list for high reliability, too.

I knew it! Japanese cars are the savers!

Yes i agree to that! Used cars do really help you save a lot when you plan to buy one..as long as it's fully conditioned and hassle free just like you bought a new car..

How to start and drive a manual-geared car forward if its on a slope with a car right behind ?

I was taught to use the emergency (hand) brake to hold the car in place while gently releasing the clutch. It takes practice, but it works.

I am not surprised to see Honda and Toyota at the top of these lists. Unfortunately Toyota has had some troubles lately, but the cars they made in the early 2000's have really good value. Whenever someone asks me for a tip for buying used cars, I tell them to check Toyotas and Hondas first.
