War-Related Price Increases Continue

Last March, just eleven months ago, I reported that the price of .22 LR ammunition had risen 80%, from $5 to $9 per box of 550 (at Walmart). Yesterday, it was time to buy more. The price: $12, another 33% higher than last March and 140% higher than eighteen months ago. News reports indicate that the increase is due to copper shortages caused by the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
As I pointed out in the previous post, .22 LR is the basic ammunition used in a .22 rifle for training, practice, and hunting small game. This isn't combat or self-defense ammunition. It's the same ammunition I used at YMCA camp as a kid.

The astounding price increases on U.S.-manufactured ammunition have until now not been reflected in foreign-made ammo. A year ago, I paid $175 for a case of Russian-made 7.62 x 39. Today the price is $225 per case-- a mere 29% increase.Today, I bought the last case priced at $225 at our local retailer. His costs rose rather suddenly (a fact that can be verified on any internet ammo retailer, keeping in mind that you;d pay frieght to have it delivered). The new price will be $275 per case, 22% higher than this week, and 57% higher ...
